In spring, when temperatures reach warm enough levels, we open the pond by scrubbing all algae from the waterfall if applicable, and then we remove all unwanted surface debris. We then cut off all dead marginal plant growth from the previous year. At this time while there is still a reasonable amount of visibility, we vacuum the accumulated leaves and debris from bottom of pond. As the water becomes very cloudy and the vacuumed waste accumulation becomes less, we clean up and leave the premises for approximately 3-5 days allowing the stirred up floating debris to settle. We then return and repeat the necessary steps as required, until water becomes cloudy again. Approximately 3 days later we will return to disassemble pump and filter assembly, we then clean the filter and all internal pump parts, then re-assemble and re-install.
Note: Lilies should be divided and replanted every 2-3 years. You will now be able to enjoy a clear, healthy pond as the summer progresses.
For closing in late fall, the same steps are repeated as necessary. Total hours required for each step depend on severity of accumulated debris. Every pond and their surroundings have different characteristics. Some ponds have large trees over and around them that shed massive amounts of leaves and debris, etc. Other ponds have absolutely nothing around them and hardly require any maintenance what so ever.
